What is the difference between 9K, 14K and 18K Gold?

The karat measures the proportion of pure gold mixed with other metal alloy to make up the final metal.

karat also used to measure the weight of diamonds and gemstones. Although the same term is used, these two measurements are different.

Most popular Metal Alloys:

Platinum Naturally white and exceptionally rare, platinum’s 95% purity makes it hypoallergenic too. You’ll feel the difference: platinum weighs 40% more than 18k gold.
9KW White Gold 9-karat white gold alloy is 37.5% pure gold mixed with other metals for durability. Our white gold is Mixed with Palladium for extra brightness and Quality (Nickel Free).
9KY Yellow Gold 9-karat yellow gold alloy is 37.5% pure gold. It is the most durable gold recipe with a classic golden glow.
9KR Rose Gold 9-karat rose gold alloy is 37.5% pure gold with copper added for . Its rosy glow flatters skin tones.
14KW White Gold 14-karat white gold alloy is 58.5% pure gold mixed with other metals for durability. Our white gold is Mixed with Palladium for extra brightness and Quality (Nickel Free).
14KY Yellow Gold 14-karat yellow gold alloy is 58.5% pure gold. It is the most durable gold recipe with a classic golden glow.
14KR Rose Gold 14KR Rose Gold 14-karat rose gold alloy is 58.5% pure gold with copper added for . Its rosy glow flatters skin tones.
18KW White Gold A premium alloy that is preferred in Europe, 18-karat white gold is 75% pure gold. Our white gold is rhodium plated for extra brightness and Nickel Free
18KY Yellow Gold A premium alloy that is preferred in Europe, 18-karat yellow gold alloy is 75% pure gold. It is the most durable gold recipe with a classic golden glow.
18KR Rose Gold A premium alloy that is preferred in Europe, 18-karat rose gold alloy is 75% pure gold with copper added for . Its rosy glow flatters skin tones.
Silver A noble metal with a cool white tone, sterling silver develops a patina over time. If you prefer a bright finish, polish will restore its shine.

Is your gold nickel-free?

Yes. Our Gold is nickel – free as nickel can cause a reaction in some people.

Do you rhodium plate the white gold rings?

Yes. When white gold rings are new they can be coated with another white metal called rhodium, which is similar to platinum to give the jewellery a whiter look as the natural Colour of white gold is a light grey Colour.

Does the rhodium plating eventually wear off?

Yes. As the rhodium does wear eventually it is generally recommended that the jewellery piece is re-rhodium plated approximately 12 to 18 months by a qualified Jeweller. However, re-rhodium plating your jewellery is at your discretion. We don’t believe it is absolutely necessary because when making our white gold jewellery we use palladium as an alloy which ensures that even when the rhodium plating eventually wears off the natural Colour of the white gold remains beautiful.

What do I need to consider when deciding between the gold Karat types?

  • The metals performance with every day wear
  • The difference in Colour between the 9K, 14K and 18K gold
  • The difference in price between the gold karats.

We suggest that 18K gold generally holds up to everyday wear better than 9K and can also look better than 9K over time.

What is Titanium?

Titanium is a silver-greyish-white colour. Titanium is the hardest natural metal in the world. It is much stronger than gold, silver and platinum and yet is very light weight. We don’t offer titanium as a standard metal on our site as it cannot be soldered, which means that titanium rings cannot normally be resized. Although if you specifically require this please liaise with our Online Design Team and they will accommodate your needs.

What is Platinum?

Platinum is a white metal, but unlike gold it is used in jewellery in almost its pure form (approximately 95% pure). Platinum is long wearing and very white in Colour, so it does not need to be rhodium plated like white gold does. Platinum will feel heavier than an 18ct gold ring and it is more expensive than gold.

What is Palladium?

Palladium is a white metal, which has a silver-grey-white colour and is similar to platinum. Palladium is well suited to use with engagement rings and wedding rings. The price of palladium is lower than platinum so it is affordable option.

What is Silver?

Sterling silver is a white-grey coloured metal which is less expensive than gold, platinum and titanium.

Silver is a softer metal than gold, titanium and platinum and does not have hardness that the other metals do.

It is best used for jewellery that will not be worn every day for an extended period. Silver is also more prone to oxidisation, sometimes causing the silver to turn black. The silver jewellery can easily be made to look like new again if you use a silver jewellery cleaner or if you have your jewellery cleaned by a qualified Jewellery.

A

This grade denotes that the product in question is semi clean, reasonably cut and polished with noticeable variations and inconsistency in Colour appropriation.

Unlike diamonds, there is no accepted grading system for coloured gemstones. But at Design It Jewels we hand select all our gemstones to ensure they are of high standard and reflect the beauty they should. Most gemstones we sell are eye-clean, which means there are no visible inclusions. An exception is emerald, which due to their nature are very rare without some visible inclusions. In pieces with multiple gemstones, we take extra care to make sure all the stones in the piece are well-matched. Some gem varieties have less-intense Colours in smaller sizes, including aquamarine, tanzanite, rhodolite, and yellow sapphire. Design It Jewels only offers natural gemstones which have been enhanced in trade-accepted ways to maximize their beauty. Amethyst, aquamarine, blue sapphire, citrine, ruby, tanzanite, and yellow sapphire have been enhanced by heat. Black diamond and blue topaz have been enhanced by irradiation. Emerald’s fissures are filled with oil or resin to reduce their visibility. For more information about gemstone enhancement, refer to gem enhancement guide.

Can I get a grading certificate for my gemstone?

All our Centre white diamonds that are 0.50cts and over are accompanied with a grading report from Gemological Institute of America (GIA) unless specified otherwise. In relation to Colour gemstones we are not satisfied with any of the Colour grading systems that exist for coloured gemstones and don’t recommend paying extra for an identification report, although you are welcome to commission one yourself. We absolutely stand behind the quality of the gems we sell.

We source our gemstones from reputable suppliers all over the world to find the best gem available and to match the specifications you have ordered.
